Pear Tree offers new approach to after-school learning

Posted Friday, October 28, 2011 by Peter Forai

VANCOUVER, BC - Paul Romani and Alexis Birner are getting ready to offer children in Vancouver a brand new interactive way of after-school learning. With a vision of ‘education for life’, the two directors are opening their Pear Tree Education learning centre in January in Kitsilano. They promise a centre that helps children achieve success far and beyond the classroom.

Based on 'Education 3.0' principles, the methods Pear Tree provides will offer a new approach that develops well-rounded children who can succeed, and empowers them to thrive in 21st century education, work, and life.

“We started Pear Tree Education for two reasons,” says Paul. “Firstly, to address the need to modernize education to make it relevant to today’s society and the needs of young people and Canadian businesses; and secondly to challenge kids to actually apply education and these skills to real-life projects connected to work and life.”

Pear Tree’s new approach to learning is founded on Education 3.0's fundamentals: working collaboratively with others, learning by doing, creating new ideas, using technology meaningfully, thinking critically, and being able to apply knowledge to real life - all skills which are necessary for someone to be successful in the 21st century.

“Education 3.0 treats subjects, such as math and literacy, as being interrelated,” notes Paul, “that’s the way they are in real life; and at Pear Tree we will be developing and applying these skills through theme-based projects. We’re enabling kids to understand how to blend all of their education and natural aptitudes to become the most successful people that they can be.”

Pear Tree’s new website www.pear-tree.ca  gives more detail on the Pear Tree methodology and Education 3.0. Opening in the New Year, the Pear Tree learning centre will be providing weekly classes, either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. It will be located on West Broadway / Stephens St. (near MacDonald St.) within close proximity of three local schools, a major public transit route, and off-road parking.
